United Way of North Central Mississippi’s Citywide Tailgate Returns for Another Year

Citywide Tailgate is happening on Friday, September 13th! The United Way of North Central Mississippi in conjunction with the Greater Starkville Development Partnership’s New South Weekends is hosting this community fundraiser.

With the purchase of a $5 wristband, attendees can enjoy food at any of the multiple tailgating locations downtown and on Russell Street, Academy Road, Hospital Road, and more. Last year's event hosted 23 tailgate sites where 40 local businesses and restaurants welcomed everyone to eat and enjoy lunch on a Friday in the name of supporting local charitable organizations. This year‘s event begins at 11:00 am and ends at 1:30 p.m.

Adding to the excitement of the day is the annual tailgating competition. The awards given are: Best in Zone (one in each of the 5 zones), Best New Tailgater, and the Best Citywide Tailgater.

Toby Steed with the 2018 award-winning East Mississippi Lumber Company said, “We had a blast! It was very humbling to win Best New Tailgater last year. We really enjoyed interacting with our customers and meeting everyone! We are excited to have Weber Grills joining us this year and hope to have an even better Citywide Tailgate for all.”

With your $5 wristband, in addition to enjoying lunch and fun, you can participate in Retailgating Delight the day of Citywide Tailgate. Retailers participating will be offering a 10% discount to all those shoppers with a Citywide Tailgate wristband on their wrists. Discounts on a shopper’s purchase will be good for the entire day. With three times as many local participants as last year, there is even more reason to go shopping at your favorite stores in Starkville!

Paige Watson, Special Events and Projects Coordinator for GSDP, exclaimed, “We are so excited about this year’s event, and the Partnership is proud to once again include UWNCM's Citywide Tailgate and Retailgating Delight on this year’s New South Weekend's schedule!”

Wristbands will be available for purchase beginning August 30th at the following locations: Bancorp South- University Drive, Regions Bank-University Drive, What’s For Dinner on Academy Road, Campus Book Mart on Lee Blvd., and Prographics in the Vowell’s Shopping Center.

Helping to make this event successful are our community sponsors BankFirst; James “Cubby” Harris

“It is events of this caliber and strong neighbors like our participants, our sponsors, and our volunteers that allow UWNCM to bring people together for the cause of building a community better for everyone,” remarked Candy Crecink, Executive Director.
