Coming Soon… United Way of NCM’s April Happenings!

February 28, 2019

On Saturday, April 27th, United Way of North Central Mississippi (UWNCM) will host our 7th annual Touch-A-Truck event! From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McKee Park, kids of all ages will get to explore and climb on over so many big trucks! Big rigs, tow trucks, a police cruiser, and even a fire truck are some but not all the big trucks we have to show you at our event! The vehicles presented will be from all types- public service, emergency, utility, construction, transportation, and delivery. This is an amazing way for families to enjoy a warm, sunny day, while letting their children discover a hands-on experience they’ll never forget.

Purchasing a $5 wristband for children is all they need to explore the types of trucks , receive a hot dog, access to face painting, a balloon animal and photo booth.. Best of all, adults get in for free!! Drinks and chips will be available for purchase at our Touch-A-Truck Snack Shack for $1 each. Chill Zone of Starkville will sell snow cones and Starkville’s Pop Porium will also be there to sell delicious popcorn as well. Not only that, but Chick-Fil-A of Starkville will set up a booth featuring their famous cow and a prize wheel!

Touch-A-Truck was originally hosted by Volunteer Starkville. This year, United Way of NCM  has been invited to assume the  wheel  to host the event with City of Starkville, Starkville Parks and Rec, Oktibbeha County and OCH Regional Medical Center joining  as partners. Support is coming in daily from a host of community minded sponsors. Growing larger each year,  this year’s Touch-A-Truck is already at 40 plus vehicles. At our Touch-A-Truck event, first responders and police crew will demonstrate c how to use the equipment of each truck and show children the importance and value of the vehicles.. Proceeds will be going towards UWNCM’s nonprofit organizations to ensure all our neighbors are full, fit and literate.

“Our motto is "Stronger neighbors make stronger communities” ... With this event, we not only raise money for the many activities that we support, but we give kids both young and old the ability to see and witness the many vehicles that make our community stronger and better, a win-win for us all.”

In addition, another exciting event will be the annual United We Read Big Book Giveaway, a program endorsing literacy for all ages to the neighboring four counties that we serve. Anyone who loves to read is welcomed to come and select for free books to enjoy and to share with others.  Partnering with UWNCM  will be the Starkville Kiwanis and Read To Succeed. There will be a variety of hundreds  of  books available.   Those who would like to donate books may do so by contacting the United Way office or watch for the big red  drop off boxes and tubs that will be throughout the area in April.

What a day! Any child and most adults would love to discover up close a bulldozer, a crane, and even honk the horn of a big rig! Everyone would love to carry a bag or box full of books with them that will expand their horizons or welcome them to new adventures. .Committee coordinator and UWNCM Board Member Jeremiah Dumas, emphasizes the importance of teamwork and dedication it takes to pull in an event like this together: Sponsorships will ensure great family activities for all.  To make this event happen, 100 volunteers are needed to sign up for this exciting event. Shifts are available to match anyone’s schedule for flexibility. The responsibilities include assisting with the concession stand, giving directions to visitors, and providing service at our event registration station. To sign up as a sponsor or a volunteer, simply contact our United Way NCM office at 662-323-3830, or visit our United Way of NCM office on the third floor of Regions Bank.
